  5. BRIEFINGS:

GERMANS:
6th Army is surrounded in Stalingrad! The Luftwaffe can keep it alive for the time being. But not indeffinetely. Operation Winter Storm has just begun (the three panzer divisions headed for Stalingrad from the South-east). However pursuing this operation might turn out to be dangerous as the Soviets stand ready to break through further north by the Romanians and Italians. Even further north intelligence is picking up rumors of further Soviet forces building up accross from the Hungarian 2nd Army. How will this threat be met? Army Group A - the forces in the Caucasus - has a dilemma. Does it stay and hold its hard earned ground...? Does it run to Rostov...? Does it fall back in good order towards the Taman peninsula...? Or maybe some combination of the above... Nothing is certain except that to avoid disaster a carefull handling of your forces will be required.

SOVIETS:
We have surrounded the German 6th Army! It is imperative that this powerfull fascist army be held contained and then destroyed. It is up to you whether this should be achieved through starvation or force of arms. But your goals are far more ambitious than this Comrade. The remnants of the Romanian 3rd army, that held the flank north of Stalingrad, is ripe for another breakthrough. Only one or two Panzer-Divisions can offer any real resistance here. South of Stalingrad the Germans have somehow managed to mount a rather powefull relief attempt. Defeat this force and you will have a clear path to Rostov. If you are fast enough here the entire German Army Group A will be cut off in the Caucasus. Furthermore: In mere weeks your forces accross from the Hungarian 2nd Army will be ready for their offensive. If you succeed in breaking this poorly equipped Army then the hole in Fritz's lines will surely be too big for any recovery to be possible. Be aggressive commander - but do not over-reach... We have come too far to repeat old mistakes.

  1. DESIGNER NOTES:

-Romanian Cavalry Divisions are represented by Romanian Veteran Infantry

-Romanian Mountain Divisions are represented by Romanian elite Infantry

-Slovak Fast Division is represented by an Elite semi-motorised Italian division

-Of the many german ad-hoc Battlegroups of the time; only some are incorporated in the scenario. However these are enlarged and some have also been beefed up with veterancy. This is done for balance purposes. These small and pretty much untrained batallion sized forces are in essence too small to be represented in Unity of Command. But they did hold up sizeable forces at very important times and places. As such they could not be left out. I feel that the way it has been done here works.

-The Soviet order of battle is not as ”precise” as the German order of battle. When it comes to the red army it is very hard to find reliable material below army level for many parts of the front. Many of the readily available maps on sites such as wiki are grossly innacurate. One even deployed the same army two places at the same time. Whoever made it didn't know that the army in question had simply changed names before re-deploying... and so the same army was two places at the same time but with different names. Because of stuff like this I tend to try and stay away from wiki when making scenarios. But alas it was not entirely possible to avoid during the making of ”Turn of the Tide”.

Comments:

  • Only 1 Problem. Russians can never crack the German position on the Donets, and the 1st SS Panzer Corps can easily counter-attack against the over-extended Soviets. Or maybe I am Just doing something wrong.

  • A small but important addition: I recommend a house rule for players playing this scenario: To prevent exploitative gameplay: Only a single(!) german air supply pr. turn should be allowed outside the Stalingrad Pocket as it exists in the beginning of the scenario. This no matter the status of the pocket. So no "roaming never out of supply superblob" ;).

    Cheers

  • A masterpiece that can be modified to create even better scenarios. Quite strategic too.
