Hi...
after playing a dozen hours, I think I got the grasp of the game, more or less. However, there are some things that still confuse me, so here it goes...
1/ What determines which units you get in the next scenario, is it pre-defined?
2/ What if a pre-defined unit died in the previous scenario, will you start with less troops?
3/ If a troop is active in scenario 1 and 2, and it had only 2 "steps" at the end of scenario 1, will it start with 2 steps in scenario 2 too?
4/ Do units keep their specialists when going from one scenario to another?
5/ When do you use the "Elite replacement" card (I can't seem to use it in the preparation phase when I buy reinforcements, which is where it is needed).
Thanks in advance for any answers, even partial ones!

Hey Yogol, here are my answers
- It is pre-defined. You can look up the standalone scenarios to see which units will end up in the next scenario that you're currently playing, and plan accordingly
- When a pre-defined unit dies in a previous scenario, you'll see a message at the start of the next scenario saying "such and such units have been reinforced". In other words, the unit is rebuilt to 4 or 6 steps. However, it starts off with no specialist steps and is a regular (while the units that got destroyed would start with specialist steps and/or veteran/elite status in the standalone scenario). Don't lose units!
- Yes, it will only start with two steps. This can be a major hassle if it starts on the front lines
- Yes. The only exception might be paratrooppers, who will lose their specialist steps when they get airdropped in a new scenario. However, the specialist step should be added to the HQ's reserve to be redeployed. It is also sometimes buggy and the para keeps its specialist steps despite being airdropped (paradropping tanks and artillery can be somewhat hard in real life...)
- You use it typically on turn 1. If you have a lot of understrenght veteran/elite units, it is more cost-efficient to reinforce them with that card. It also works with veteran units btw. Finally, it is extremely powerful in scenarios such as Battle of the Bulge, where you do not get a preparation phase. That card becomes the only way for you to reinforce units in that scenario.
Hope it helps!

About that Elite Replacements card...
... so if there IS a preparation phase and you have that card, you should not reinforce units until after the preparation phase? (I don't know, I've never tried it, but have had that card before and have thought 'how on Earth do I use this card?".

You need to make the following calculation: "Do I have enough elite/veteran units that I need to reinforce for this scenario which would lose their veteran/elite status if I used regular reinforcements?"
For example, if you have an elite unit with 5 steps and 309 xp, adding a step in the preparation phase would cost 20xp, bringing it down to veteran level (less than 100xp is green, 100+ xp is regular, 200+ xp is veteran, 300+ xp is elite). However, waiting to use the card would allow to add a step costing only 5xp, which would make it keep its elite status. As each experience level brings a +1 modifier roll against lower experienced units, this can make the difference in tight scenarios (an elite unit as a +3 roll modifier against green units, +2 against regular, and +1 against veteran).
On the other hand, reinforcements bought with the card cost more prestige than in the preparation phase. So if you're low on prestige, you might not be able to use it all that much.
You can also buy specialist steps with the card, which make it extra handy in scenarios such as Battle of the Bulge. I don't think they cost extra prestige, and they don't lower unit xp
Best way to understand its use is to play it. You'll inevitably play it at a bad time, find out it's useless, and understand better when to actually use it.
