Hi,
I just recently discovered this game and am thinking of buying it. I was looking over the unit chart in one of the blog posts and have a question: Why is there such a large difference in the number of units available to each faction? The Germans have sixteen units to choose from while the Soviets only have six. Am I missing something? It seems like it would be more fun to always play as the Germans since they have the most strategic potential due to the large number of units available to them.

The Axis indeed has more more unit types, but when you take into account the Hungarian, Italian and Romanian units it's not that much of a difference. These are unit types that are similar in practice but have to be accounted for separately for historical accuracy.
The real variation in Unity of Command comes from cleverly combining your major units with the smaller "specialist steps"... you can check out how this works in this blog post:
