Does this game have CORE units like in Panzer General?

Unread postby PolishPaul » Mon May 13, 2013 10:24 pm

Hello,

This game feels JUST like Panzer General, a great classic. From the demo, i feel like i could to enjoy this game. It feels just like the original PG but with improvements in most if not all areas. I'm wondering if this game also has the same addictive attribute that PG had. I'm talking about "core" units and "auxiliary" units. In PG a core unit went with you from map to map and accumulated experience; they became you're crack units later and were very valuable in battle. You also had auxiliary units that you could buy, that would only last for that map and you'd loose em.

The addictive attribute that I liked about that was the fact that you got to build and grow your army. You had a lot of vehicles to choose from, cool tanks, inf, arty, aa, etc to buy... Not only did you build up your army by selecting your units, they stayed with you for the entire campaign. How does this game accomplish something similar? I liked having the option to build up my air force, but here it seems an "off map" type of thing. I didn't experience artillery either. I see there are unit attachments. Does this game have the same rewards in this area of the game?. I feel like the demo isn't showing me all things.

Thanks,
Paul

From the demo, you've successfully identified things that aren't in the game!

It's a very good introductory wargame and it uses a lot of the same mechanics as serious wargames (although you'd never know it). But it doesn't have carryover units, and the air and artillery modelling is pretty simple. Maybe for the sequel...

That's too bad, kinda kills the replay value.

Wish there were more "toys" in the game, a relationship with the units :)

A better question would be about the depth or variety of units. Does the demo show all available attachments etc?

Seems like this game can have a lot more depth, or is that just the demo?

To steal a line from Troy Goodfellow: Unity of Command is about supply. It's not about units. It contains elegant systems that make maneuvering both challenging and enjoyable. I barely looked at the attachments other than to find the highest modifier to make my initial breakthrough before pouring my units through the breach.

There is some variety in the unit icons but this isn't really a unit porn game like Panzer Corps or Wargame: European Escalation, which are nice but different.

:D The quantity of unit types in Panzer Corps is quite overwhelming, and so many of them are only marginally different.

Not really. Outcomes of combat can vary a bit from estimates and weather can be different. Small things like this can entirely change the outcome. I've played quite a few scenarios and I find replayability to be much greater than one could expect, given that units, supplies and starting positions remain the same. Try to play same game (a few times) in a row and you should witness how differently each one will play out.

This game plays nothing like Panzer Corps, thankfully.
