No move take back & no saves?

Unread postby willgamer » Tue Nov 15, 2011 9:30 pm

If true, makes me reluctant to get into the campaign. I make too many finger slips and am too impatient to restart over and over... :(

You can restart the campaign from the beginning of any scenario, look for the black button with an undo-like arrow symbol on it (lower right part of the campaign map). This is so you don't have to play the campaign all over again every time you feel you could do better in one of the scenarios.

Other than that, no... no undo (although it is planned for the updates) and there are no saves in campaign mode by design. I still think you should give the campaign a try - our experience with testers is that after a few days they adapt to the UI and don't make that many slips any more.

I believe that is probably the best way to play this game in fact.

Play a few scenarios first: tutorial, introductory, one or two from the "easy" group. Then jump into the campaign and just keep reloading when you get stuck... either because you need a DV/BV or simply to accumulate more prestige for later scenarios.

I like this game.

I agree with the learning path described above.

However, for perhaps just me, the idea of restarting a campaign scenario, hours into playing it, is completely unpalatable.

I'm writing this mostly to encourage you to add the promised "undo" function sooner rather than later.

It's not just the finger slips.

"Undo" is critical to the learning process by allowing a player to see the results of a move (e.g. the odds a particular unit could have against an enemy unit) without being commited to that move.

IMHO, I can live with save as implemented, but no "undo" means a much higher learning curve than necessary and (again, just for me) unbearable frustration with movement errors. :(

Thanks for listening; thanks for a great game! :D

Just to be sure we're on the same page here - I am refering to reloading the campaign via the "reload campaign" button on the campaign map, not playing the entire campaign from scratch every time.

Sorry if i'm stating the obvious, but sometimes new players don't notice the little black button on the lower right...

Due to popular demand, undo is now on top of the todo list :)

Lack of save is really annoying for the learning process, especially without a tutorial. I'm several turns into a complex campaign scenario. I've read the manual completely but wanted to check how the reinforcement process worked in practice. So I decided to try it out in my game. I knew about the autosave on exiting the game so I decided to end the program through the Windows Task Manager rather than a normal exit. I had assumed (falsely it turns out) that this would bypass the autosave. It would have been better to have pulled the electric socket from my computer, although it would probably autosaved that too. Now I'm stuck with having spent lots of prestige I didn't want to spend on units I didn't want improving.

Sorry if I sound grumpy but I was enjoying the game and this has kind of spoilt it. I had even checked the Unity of Command folders to try to locate the game save so I could back it up before I pressed any of the reinforcement buttons.

Are there any cheat codes out there that can let me restore my prestige points and remove some unwanted specialist steps from some units?

No unfortunately, there's no such option. You can only do these two things:

1. Reload the campaign from the start of said scenario (use "Reload Campaign" button on the campaign map) but then you lose the turns you made.

2. For future experimentation play single scenarios instead of campaign. These can be saved/reloaded at will and are in fact intended for experimentation like that.

I hope this helps...

Thanks for the info, but I'm well into the 24-turn Stalingrad scenario so I don't want to start again. I don't see any reason for such a rigid auto-save system - I can't see how it benefits the end-user in any way. With a campaign-based game in which many hours are invested, one unintentional clerical error with absolutely zero chance to put it right can ruin a player's immersive experience in a game.
