New Player here - Tips & Tricks

Unread postby nopaint » Fri Feb 14, 2014 12:02 pm

Hi everyone! I don't usually join forums, but since this is a deep strategy game, and the community is usually friendly in these sorts of things, I decided to join.

I've been watching this game for a long time, and I managed to purchase it today. The fact of it having a Linux version is a huge plus, and I'm currently reading the manual

But, as everyone knows, this is only the beginning. To lessen my effort of getting into the game, I now stand here among you, fellow strategists, asking for entry-level strategies and stuff you think I should know so I can begin to develop my game.

Thanks in advance, and maybe we will be seeing ourselves online someday :)

Welcome to the forum:)!

Reading the manual is a good start since its short and very good. There is a tutorial and an introductory scenario but they're hidden under scenarios (and then "Stalingrad campaign" if you have any of the expansions). Do those before a campaign.

The undo button is your best friend. Try out movements and check attack odds before committing to an attack (attacks can not be undone).

Don't grind down the enemy. Find a weakness and try to push through to create an encirclement. Units out of supply for 2 turns can't attack and pose no direct threat to you. They can cut your supply lines though, so watch out.

Try to not attack across rivers without a pioneer specialist.

The axis campaign is harder (but better) than the soviet campaign. Your choice...

Some scenarios require additional victory conditions to unlock. Make a backup if you want to go back and retry a previous scenario and reach those conditions because later scenarios will also have to be replayed. "~/.uoc/save/campaign" is the location in Linux (all files in the folder needs to be saved).

I think that will do for now...

Welcome :)

Hard to say really. Different parts of the game comes naturally to different people. Some good tips by Juoc above me. And if there is anything else then just ask away!

I've only been playing the game for a few weeks so I am almost as new as you are but I have a couple of suggestions to add to those that have been made thus far. At present I have been playing in scenario mode (I only have the Stalingrad campaign) progressing down the list in order and playing each until I am successful at capturing all the objectives within the total time allotted, paying little attention to final score. The next scenario I will play is "3rd Kharkov".

One strategy I have developed is to save the game at the beginning of each turn, giving each turn a different name. For instance, I would save 3rd Kharkov before I make a move on the first turn and were playing it this morning as "1014 0217 1t1 3rd Kharkov" so that I know exactly which date it is along with the notation that it is the first time I've played it today and it is turn 1 (1t1). At the start of turn 2 I would leave everything the same except use "1t2". This way if, late in the scenario, I see some mistake made on an early turn I can return to that point and play again.

I have also started a scenario in "Hotseat" mode so that I controlled movement of both sides. Having control of both sides meant I could easily test different matchups in different terrain, explore use of different weapon systems and control other variables not possible when AI is trying to defeat me.

Finally, after playing the "Case Blue" scenario a couple of times without success, I used the "Scenario Editor" and altered the "Case Blue" scenario so that I had 12 turns instead of 10 to capture all of the objectives. Although I haven't done it (yet!) it would be possible to use an altered scenario to test all of the different weapons systems and to get used to using all different types of reinforcements, both OKH Reserve and Force Pool units.

As you've had all weekend to get to know the game and strategy better you may have already discovered some of these for yourself. Enjoy.
