Things I Learned From Playing Unity of Command

This game knocked my socks off - I have clocked more hours on it than anything comparable, to the extent it probably rivals grand strategic time sinks like Europa Universalis and Civ, which are supposed to take forever and a day to complete. However, every game has a thread like this and somebody had to do it here. Here goes.

- STAVKA don't approve when you ask a corps to disperse and send the soldiers back home. They would much rather every last man in the unit is sent to his certain death in a pointless frontal attack.

- The life expectancy of a Soviet artilleryman was approximately 2 minutes.

- Kiev was captured without resistance shortly after the liberation of Kharkov, but was then immediately given back to the Germans to afford them a sporting chance.

- You can kill every man in the Grossdeutschland division three or four times over and they will spring back to life in good time for the next engagement.

- The Germans could have pulled a near bloodless capture of Stalingrad during the opening stages of Case Blue, but were stopped by an impenetrable grey wall a few dozen kilometres short of the city.

- It was commonplace in both the Axis and Soviet armed forces to attach expensive and valuable specialist units to second line forces made up of cripples, gimps and unreliable allies. Meanwhile, spearhead armour and mech divisions went without.

- As soon as Operation Uranus began, the Sixth Army immediately abandoned Stalingrad and streamed west in order to try and escape the pocket. Hitler was absolutely cool with this.

Good thread. The main thing I've learned is that the Germans failed to take Stalingrad because they didn't have enough prestige points to buy both the force pool reinforcement divisions.

Also, they didn't extend supply from the depot on the rail hex.

Pretty sure that was Hiter's fault ...
