Specialist Steps

Unread postby nikdav » Tue Jan 08, 2013 10:08 pm

Only some thoughts about the Specialist steps:

- The Soviet "120mm M30" must be correct as "122mm M30"
- We need a Soviet "Sapper " step
- for the german "Sdkfz 250" is better a " Sdkfz 232" or a "BMW sidecar"
- why the german Jagdpz IV ? , it would be better the "Hetzer "
- and why not a german artillery step Hummel or Brummbar ?

I guess the first issue comes from rounding somewhere, just like some games insist on 76mm instead of 76.2mm. 122mm is, of course, correct.

We don't have a Soviet sapper step or German artillery step because the Soviets break entrenchment through their artillery shift and the Germans through engineers, it's a design decision. If we gave the Soviets sappers and the Germans artillery, that entire difference in terms of how attacks against entrenched units would develop would be gone.

The Germans use a halftrack for recon because that was far more common for this period than armoured cars or motorcycles after the losses of 1941-1942. Armoured car production in particular was low and halftracks were far more economical. The recon step is already sort of an exception to the rule that we tend to have specialist steps that were independent units.

The Jagdpanzer IV was chosen to represent late war heavier SPAT in favour of the Hetzer because the Hetzer was used for infantry support mostly, a self-propelled 75mm AT gun for the infantry divisions. The Hetzer also has a gun of the same calibre and barrel length as the StuG, which would make it kind of pointless to include it. It would also not be worth much against late war heavy Soviet armour to begin with. A Jagdpanzer IV would better represent the AT capabilities of the Panzerjaeger Abteilung of German mobile units so it's another exception to the rule of only including specialist steps that represent independent units.

Thanks , I agreed with your considerations......but..... at least the 122mm in the next patch........
I consider UOC not only a very good game but also an historical simulation.
