Race Across France in Classic

Unread postby Ritalingamer » Thu Nov 28, 2019 2:51 pm

For some reason, I am stuck on this scenario in my first ever Classic campaign. This scenario was easy on Normal, but still exciting, but here, it's like I keep falling short of capturing the last VP in the Northeastern corner of the map. It's also a bear keeping both wings of 3rd Army in command range of HQ, with having to split them with a river between. What am I missing?

EDIT: I may have answered my own question. It looks like making a fist with 3rd Army and going straight for Verdune, the Moselle, and Nancy is the best option, leaving all the other VPs for 7th Army. Splitting 3rd Army seems to not work very well. This time, I managed to eke out a win.

Did you capture Lyon in Dragoon? It changes the mission quite a bit (removes one objective, means your southern force is delayed and makes taking Besancon in 5 turns hard)

Anyway - I recommend the following - firstly, reinforce the infantry in direct contact in the north a bit. Aim is to take out the enemy infantry in one attack. If that fails, do _not_ attack with the tank if you can avoid it - you'll often get the scout car supressed and if you don't overrun them you need that scout car to reach Reims on turn 1. Alternatively, you can build a pontoon NE of your southern tank which will let you jump it across and save the day should you be out of reach otherwise.

If you took Lyon in Dragoon you don't really need the 3rd Army to push South. Everything should be focussed on Nancy. Leave one division in Verdun and try to get everyone else to Nancy as quickly as possible. Lots of enemy reinforcements will spawn around there which makes life hard. Getting the Moselle objective is nice as it gives you an engineer specialist. The pontoon NE of the South tank helps a bit here.

If you didn't take Lyon in Dragoon then you have a tougher time. Fortunately you don't have to take Langres now, but getting Dijon and Besancon on time is much harder. I suggest sending one tank division and one infantry division down to the South to help out.

Yep - this :)

A word of warning: The version where you manage to take Lyon has a buggy map border. This means you can advance further east than intended which in turn means that German reinforcements that spawn near Nancy might appear "among" your troops if they have an empty hex to do so.

This should be fixed in update 6.
