Edelweiss (BETA4) (moved from Beta test forum)

Let's keep only one thread active per scenario. What do you think about a particular scenario. Was it too easy, too hard? Did you win or lose at first? Post descriptions of your brilliant victories and unfortunate defeats here.

Edelweiss (BETA4) (moved from Beta test forum)

One tactic I discovered here is to push a tank and a man to the East as soon as possible, which allows you to take Elista on turn 5, before it is garrisoned. I then leave the man and run the tank south to re-group with the main force near the final city. Otherwise it can be quite tricky to dislodge the infantry out of that town, since it is far out of your supply range. I haven't had anyone spawn in the city after I've taken it, but I think it is worth leaving some non-germans to "just make sure". Not sure whether the loss of a tank really slows my main advance. Maybe I'd be better just throwing a few infantry (with an engineer?) that way and not attack until turn 9 when the supply is very close to the objective?

Never seemed worthwhile to unlock the extra units by capturing the landing sites. Might make more sense if you got those troops as completely free reinforcements, then the extra effort might be worthwhile.

Possible bug: I cleared the entrenchment from a city garrison at the final city with a recon unit. I thought that only engineers cleared entrenchment?

Engineer steps have bonus on clearing entrenched units, but you can do that with any unit (with more loses/attacks).

Brilliant victory on turn 9. I have the feeling the capture limit on Novorossiysk, like that of Bryansk in Orel/Bryansk, was relaxed a bit. With luck, you can take it on turn 8, but with skill and regular luck, it's perfectly possible to take it on turn 9.

The AI didn't garrison Elista, it just tried to block my path, which meant that getting there only required infantry and some initial help from a motorized division.

I did buy plenty of specialist steps, both for their effectiveness and for "flavour", to make some units better than others. I bought every possible specialist step except for the towed AT/AA.

Unlike the Soviets, specialist steps can really make a unit perform quite a bit better, especially mobile units. For the Soviets, a Heavy Tank step usually just means maybe inflicting 1 more extra step of damage/suppression. For the Axis, specialist steps can significantly increase overrun chances and overall effectiveness. In many scenarios, you do need a fair number of overruns to break through Soviet lines, so a 90% overrun chance going to 40% with 1 suppressed step is what you need.

The saved game. A motorized division took a scenic route to the Taman Peninsula, I guess it could've helped me capture Novorossiysk on turn 8, but I still had time.

Deployment at the end of my first turn, the AI's first turn, my second turn and the AI's second turn.

Turn 3. An infantry division died whilst attacking after the Soviets got a good roll, the only whole unit loss of the scenario.

Turn 5. After this and after removing the defenders of the mountain pass on turn 6, it was just a matter of mopping up and racing towards the east with 3 mobile units (2 Panzer divisions, Wiking) and to the west with 1 Panzer division, with a motorized division taking the scenic route.

Yeah, I think it does make more sense to send all the tanks South like that, but the AI always seems to want to dig in a decent infantry in that city to the East and I can't dislodge it with just infantry (though you are quite right that adding special steps to German infantry probably makes them very usable). Although this is sort of irritating, I really like that the AI does different things every time I play, even if it generally is following the same plan. I'd rather have an AI that was a little random than one that always acted in the most efficient manner.
