CTD while game running - campaign lost?

So I was playing the game and experienced a CTD while doing so. This happens now and then on my current old rig. When I tried to load the campaign, the game loads for a few seconds and then nothing happens, repeated clicks do the same.

I made a few backups of the campaign saves - but replacing them doesn't help either.

Does this mean that I cannot play the game since the campaigns are long, and I cannot afford losing them to a CTD?

Is there something I can do in the registry to fix the issue (maybe there's a timestamp in there for saves?)
