Solved: Fullscreen doesn't work in boot camp on Mac. (My bad

Unread postby MacGuffen » Fri Dec 21, 2012 9:17 pm

Hi!

When I run the game in fullscreen, both in parellels and at 2880x1800 in genuine windows (I have retina mac, so it doesn't run that well in native mac), part of the picture is "outside" of my screen. So for instance I can't see the "quit" button in the main menu, because it "falls out" at the bottom, and when I go into a campaign, I can't press the back button the upper left because it's "outside" my screen.

Of course, I can just run the game in windowed mode, but I find the top bar distracting. :)

It's not a big deal, but I was hoping it was something easy for me to fix since I haven't seen anyone else report this.

Thanks!

Re: Fullscreen a bit wonky?

OK, so fullscreen doesn't really work at any resolution in boot camp either. I've tried 2880x1800, 1920x1200 and 1680x1050, and with all of them, it's like the game zooms in, like described above, which makes the game unplayable in full screen.

It works just fine in full screen on my desktop, so I really have no idea why it would be so hard here.

This is in boot camp on a Retina Macbook Pro 15.

This happens in other games. The solution there seemed to be to force the resolution, while still running in full screen. Is there a way to do this?

Hm, too bad, I was just about to ask. :?

Can you tell me what exactly happens when you set (w,h) to the native resolution of your screen? What part of the game is actually displayed?

Main menu at 1680x1050 fullscreen. Menu looks like this at all resolutions except 2880x1800, then it's ok.

The menu thing is perfectly livable, but on all resolutions the map looks like this:

So I can't click anything.

If I alt-tab out of the game, the window adjusts to the upper left so I can see the "back-button" on the map-screen, but less of the lower-right area.

To your question, nothing happens. It's the same as the pics above.

It's the same file even if I'm using steam, right?

It seems that your graphics system "zooms in" for you (but reports the original screen size to the game, which is what creates the problem). I've had this reported in a few cases on Windows. This is the procedure we used to solve it:

1) Set the resolution to windowed 1024x600 (this is simply the smallest possible resolution)

2) Start the game, and take a screenshot of the window to measure its size. For example, if the game window is 1536x900, then your system uses 1.5x zoom (because 1536/1024=900/600=1.5)

3) Now we work our way backwards from that number and multiply screen width and height by 0.666 (because 1/1.5=0.666..). So if your screen size is 1680x1050, you need to set w,h to 1120x700 and it will cover the screen completely.

ARGH! I found the problem! Since the retina screen has such a high resolution, everthing is really tiny in boot camp, so I had increased text size to 150 %! Problem is, Windows seems to zoom up games 150 % as well! I put it back to 100 % and now fullscreen works perfectly!

This can be enabled/disabled as described here.

I'm so sorry for wasting your time, I had forgotten all about it! It was only by chance I went into that menu in the first place!

Conclusion: Game works great in boot camp on Mac and I'm an idiot! :P
