Style and Content

Unread postby raykhughes » Fri Nov 18, 2011 6:28 pm

I have been attracted to this game since earlier Previews.

I do like the style and the artistic renderings. The Nato Icon thing is no biggie for me as I beleive your icons are representative of the game style. After all, this is part of differentiates your wargame from many others out there. Congratulations also on your interpretations and AI response - ( I have not played enough yet to justify any in depth recommendations, apart from what I mention below).

A feature that perhaps is possible and would reflect a severly weakened unit - a feature that was used by SSG years ago - was to depict a shattered unit graphically as in a tattered state (the unit icon was shredded and full of holes - depending on how badly it was affected). This has always struck me as a unique and delightful way of visually signfying a shattered unit. This would perhaps satisfy the clean slateboard look currently where all the enemies have been eliminated. I mean to have shattered units retreating from the front line - posing no immediate threat - but, and in a longer game, allow them to recover? I I know this is contrary to most of the short games in this current offering - but perhaps a future mod or future DLC with lengther turns would allow a shattered unit to rebuild at the expense of weakened experience?

Which leads me to... expansions or DLC. I have assumed (without any feedback) that this base game would be ideal for additional DLC in other areas of operation.... Would love to see German against US/British in Italy and perhaps Eastern European with Partisans playing a bigger role. Heck I am salivating at all the prospects possibly on offer... I would assume, but should ask directly - is it your intention (depending on how well this initial offering sells,) to provide sequels to the base offering ?

Hello,

welcome to the board, it's nice that your first impressions are so positive!

I proposed this very same thing to Nenad (who is our art director) on several occassions... doesn't like it :?

We'd love to do more campaigns. You are correct that we need to see how the sales go and then we'll make a decision where to go next. For now it looks like there will be more content, but we didn't even start the discussion on which campaign, what timeframe for release etc.

How about the fighting in Romania and Hungary then ? ;) Should offer quite a bit of variety. Or of course Operation Bagration. But of course, all will depend on sales :) Still hoping you can get it on steam as that would still be a great place since you'll have a wide base of potential consumers there.

As to the shattered thing. Any reason he doesn't like it ? :)

I swear I listened attentively when he explained it to me, but I cannot remember one thing atm. Strange... ;)

Re: future campaigns, there's already been a few speculative threads on the forum (not sure if they're in the public section though). We all have our preferences but no decision has been made yet either way.

Well i'm open to quite a few things really, as long as it isn't the pacific theatre, for some reason that never caught my interest.

Well, pacific theatre could introduce a new style of gameplay - warships !! Think of the possibilities - or am I going just a wee tad too fast here?

I must say that UoC is a brilliant game. I really like that rules themselves are pretty simple and easy to learn and yet the gameplay is complex and challenging. The only "weakness" I can think of is the number of scenarios/campaigns, though their replayability makes it less noticeable. Oh, and the game deserves a praise for its art direction. It's kind of rare to see a game with coherent and esthetic art style. Hopefully UoC sells good enough (because it clearly deserves it) and 2x2 floods us with sequels and DLCs ;)

Maybe because there really wasn't a discussion about this :)

We only discussed putting in scorched earth / smoke animation after a unit is destroyed. This was dismissed as it would interfere with the display clarity. Especially with the pace of play UoC has.

Shattering sounds nice but it could be a bit too much for the level of stylization we currently have. It somewhat evokes tactical level representation. I'll note it down as a possibility for the future releases though.

Well it could still work i suppose, give them a dishevelled and dirty look perhaps ? No longer clean shaven, helmet dinged up a bit and such perhaps ?

Of course. At the end, it probably boils down to the production budget :)
