A couple of questions re: reorganizing and disbanding units

Hi,

Really enjoying this game and very much looking forward to new developments and/or expansions to other theatres of WW2 operation. West front and the African campaign would be totally awesome!

My questions are:

1) What happens to a specialist step (sp) that is part of a unit that is being reorganized?

It seems that for a unit containing an sp, you can't both reorganize the unit and the sp in the same turn, and while it seems obvious that you could reorganize the sp first in one turn and then the unit in the following turn, what happens to the sp if the unit is reorganized first?

My question regarding disbanding units is:

What advantages are there to disbanding units other than getting rid of units that are in the way? It seems that this is the only benefit and that it is somewhat unrealistic and gamey...

Any thoughts?

Thanks,

C

It gets reorganized too, along with the other steps in the unit.

Indeed, it's purely to get them out of the way.

As for the gaminess... you can get into situations where a one-step, suppressed remnant is blocking your full strength armor from taking an objective. If that's the case then suddenly it's not so gamey IMO.

It's an artefact of the simplicity of the rules. There only so much you can do and, in fact, I think the rules version 1.1 (used in Red Turn and Black Turn) do a good job of keeping the gaminess within reason. Maybe we tweak things a little more for the new game, but I don't see disbands ever going away entirely.

I like the simplicity of the rules and wouldn't want us to get into, say, stacking multiple units in a hex. But there still remains the problem of 'traffic jams' and units getting in the way.

Maybe an alternative to disbanding is to allow two units to 'swap' their places, but at double movement cost or extra suppression or something?

Also, disbanding does serve another important purpose - turning weakened, otherwise useless units into reinforcement steps for your more valuable divisions.

This has been discussed before, but I don't like it. It's no less gamey than other mechanics, and at the same time I have no idea how to make the UI work for it.

Nope, that's reorg. Disband is its ugly, gamey cousin, but we're keeping it because, you know... family :-)
