Any clues as to what units will be in the game?

Units represent entire divisions/corps.
Each unit type icon is its single most representative piece of equipment (e.g. a T-34 tank).

Some example units:
  • Soviet Mechanized
  • Soviet Tank
  • Soviet Cavalry
  • Soviet Infantry
  • German Panzer
  • German Motorised
  • German Infantry
  • SS PzGrenadier
  • Hungarian Infantry
  • Romanian Infantry
  • Italian Alpini

Specialist steps represent a smaller specialst unit attached to a division/corps size formation.
They are represented by their military symbol or something close to it.

Some example specs:
  • 120mm M-30
  • Katyusha
  • NKVD
  • KV-1
  • 88mm FlaK
  • Tiger
  • Blackshirts

Hi Pezmic,

I just wrote a short primer on units on the blog for everyone who's interested. Check it out.

I will try to put bits and pieces (mainly from the manual) on the blog like that, but I don't know how regular this can be - we're kind of busy at the moment.

what bonuses do the specialist units provide? also will the standard unit graphic change if you have a specialist unit (i.e. tiger)?

Specialist effects are quite varied. Tigers will give you an enormous armor "shift", but they are also vulnerable and you can easily lose them to enemy attack. This is because Tigers were really not ready for deployment in '42. You only get them after Stalingrad, when the situation gets desperate.

On the other hand, a Soviet NKVD blocking detachment has the effect that your unit is less likely to retreat (obviously). It does suffer heavier losses though, precisely because it's holding ground. It's like that, tradeoffs...

The graphic does not change, you get a little specialist icon in the lower left corner (see screenshots).

It's really nice to see that there are also italian troops in the game, in most ww2 games italian army is never available and that doesn't allow me and other italian armchair generals to play with our troops. Cheers to that :D

Are Air Units represented in the game?

Air Units are a theater asset. You get a certain number of air attacks per turn and you can use them to attack anywhere on the map.

While this means that you can use air strikes at some unrealistic places (e.g. deep behind enemy lines), the mechanic itself discourages such unrealistic use. Main effect of air attacks is suppression, and that means that they are only useful for close air support, to soften the enemy before attacking with land units.
